Most people now know Jarrod Bowen two ways: as the West Ham forward who scored the last-minute winner in a European final, and as the husband of Dani Dyer, who’s back on Strictly Come Dancing in 2026 after an injury forced her out last year. He’s also Danny Dyer’s son-in-law, which has made for some very public family moments, not least when England left him out of the 2026 World Cup squad.
Here’s the full story: where he came from, how he got to the Premier League the long way round, his England career, and his family life with Dani.

Early Life in Herefordshire
Bowen was born on 20 December 1996 in Leominster, a small market town in Herefordshire. He joined his local club, Leominster Minors, at just four years old and stayed there right through to under-16 level.
Like a lot of players who make it, he was turned down along the way. He had trials at Aston Villa and Cardiff City that didn’t lead anywhere, before Hereford United took him on as a scholar. It’s a detail he’s often been asked about since, because it’s a reminder of how close he came to not making it at all.
Hereford United: A Debut at 17
Bowen made his first-team debut for Hereford on 22 March 2014, aged 17, in a 2-0 defeat to Barnet. His first senior goal came a month later, on 21 April 2014, in a 3-2 home win over Alfreton Town. He played eight times for Hereford and scored once before the club’s financial troubles meant young players had to look elsewhere.
Hull City: Learning the Hard Way
Hull City signed him on a free transfer on 8 July 2014. He spent two years in their development side before his competitive debut on 23 August 2016, in a 3-1 EFL Cup win at Exeter City.
Once he got going in the Championship, he didn’t stop. He was Hull’s top scorer in 2017-18 with 15 goals, then again in 2018-19 with 22. He won the EFL Championship Player of the Month twice (December 2018 and November 2019), made the 2018-19 EFL Team of the Season, and won Hull’s Player of the Year awards in 2018 and 2019. In total he scored 54 goals in 131 appearances for the club.

West Ham United: From Signing to Captain
West Ham signed Bowen on 31 January 2020 for a fee reported at around £22 million. He scored his first goal for the club on 29 February 2020 in a 3-1 win over Southampton, and quickly became one of the first names on the team sheet.
The night in Prague
His defining moment came on 7 June 2023. In the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina in Prague, with the score at 1-1 and the clock ticking into the 90th minute, Bowen ran through and slotted home the winner. It gave West Ham their first major trophy in 43 years. He was named in the competition’s Team of the Season.
Records and the armband
In 2023-24 he scored 16 Premier League goals, a club record for a season, and was named Hammer of the Year. On 15 August 2024, he was named West Ham club captain, taking over from Kurt Zouma.
Relegation
The last two seasons have been harder. West Ham were relegated to the Championship in May 2026. Bowen stayed with the club and had started the 2026-27 season strongly, with six goals in his first eight appearances as of early September 2026.
England Career
Bowen made his England debut on 4 June 2022, playing the full 90 minutes of a 1-0 Nations League defeat to Hungary. He missed out on the 2022 World Cup squad but was picked for Euro 2024, coming on as a substitute for Bukayo Saka in England’s opening 1-0 win over Serbia. England went on to reach the final, losing 2-1 to Spain.
His first England goal came on 17 November 2024, in a 5-0 win over the Republic of Ireland. As of March 2026, he had 22 caps and one goal.

The 2026 World Cup snub
Bowen was part of Thomas Tuchel’s first squad in March 2026, but when the 26-man World Cup squad was announced on 22 May 2026, his name wasn’t on it. Reports at the time said Tuchel had praised his attitude but preferred other attacking options. His father-in-law Danny Dyer was openly unimpressed and called the decision “ridiculous”, which made headlines of its own.
Jarrod Bowen and Dani Dyer
Bowen’s relationship with Dani Dyer, the 2018 Love Island winner and daughter of EastEnders actor Danny Dyer, became public in late 2021. Dani confirmed it on 27 December 2021 during an interview on The Lateish Show with Mo Gilligan.
- 22 May 2023: their twin daughters, Star and Summer, were born, just over two weeks before Bowen won the Conference League final.
- 21 July 2024: the couple announced their engagement.
- 30 May 2025: they married.
Dani also has a son, born in January 2021, from a previous relationship, and Bowen has been part of his life since he was a baby. The couple share family moments publicly from time to time, but keep most of the children’s day-to-day lives private.

Dani Dyer on Strictly Come Dancing
Dani was originally announced for the 2025 series of Strictly Come Dancing, paired with Nikita Kuzmin, but she fractured her ankle in rehearsals and had to withdraw before the first live show. The BBC brought her back for the 2026 series, which launched on 19 September 2026, so Bowen has gone from football fan in the stands to Strictly supporter at home on Saturday nights.
Life With Danny Dyer as a Father-in-Law
Few footballers have a father-in-law as outspoken as Danny Dyer. A lifelong West Ham fan, Dyer has spoken publicly and proudly about Bowen’s career, and he didn’t hold back when England left Bowen out of the 2026 World Cup squad. It’s an unusual family dynamic: a West Ham captain whose father-in-law is one of the club’s most famous supporters.

What Remains Unverified
- Net worth and salary: neither has been officially published. Figures online are estimates, so we haven’t included one.
- Captaincy after relegation: he was named club captain in August 2024. We couldn’t confirm from an official club statement whether the armband changed after relegation.
- Euro 2024 minutes: beyond his substitute appearance against Serbia, we haven’t confirmed his full playing time at the tournament.
Final Thoughts
Jarrod Bowen’s story is a good one: rejected by bigger academies, debut at 17 for Hereford, a free transfer to Hull, then a £22 million move, a European final winner and the West Ham armband. Off the pitch, he’s married into one of Britain’s best-known TV families, with Dani Dyer back on Strictly and Danny Dyer never far from a headline. Missing the 2026 World Cup was a blow, but at 29 and scoring freely again, the next chapter is still being written.
